Matthijs Bouw visiting professor UK
This fall Matthijs Bouw is a visiting professor at University of Kentucky.
The University of Kentucky College of Design is taking design to the Commonwealth’s river cities as they launch a new project that will focus on the creation of strategic design proposals for these communities along the Ohio River. To commemorate the launch of the “River Cities Project,” a multi-year research and design initiative, the college will host a free public photography exhibition of the recently retired HMPL1 coal-burning power plant in Henderson, Ky., the first city the project will focus on in the coming years.
This fall, the first graduate level studio will develop strategic design proposals for the city of Henderson. The studio will be led by Matthijs Bouw, UK College of Design Sutherland Visiting Professor of Landscape Design, along with School of Architecture Professor Ann Filson.

One Architecture is an Amsterdam based architecture and planning firm run by Matthijs Bouw. One Architecture wants to engage in the full complexity of today’s society. Architecture can be much more than building icons or making nice facades. It is deeply rooted in (local) culture and creates culture. Architecture can change organizations. It can help clients generate money. It can even have a political impact. One Architecture’s work integrates design and process. One Architecture’s approach has resulted in successful projects which include the much discussed design for Les Halles in Paris (with OMA and XDGA) in 2004 and urban plans for Deventer, Gouda, Eindhoven and Tbilisi (Georgia).
