One Architecture

Together with XS2N, One Architecture studied the possibilities for introducing Mediterranean living cultures in the Dutch city, as a way to reflect the growing ethnic diversity of the Netherlands.

From this study, which included fact-finding missions in Morocco and extensive collaboration with public authorities, housing corporations and migrant community leaders, a ‘toolbox’ was developed for ‘culturally profiled’ architecture and urbanism. This ‘toolbox’ is subsequently put to work on a test-location in Rotterdam. The proposal includes the ‘best of both worlds’, where Moroccan housing models are transformed to suit the contemporary urban dweller. The work realized by One Architecture consisted of the development of a toolbox for the manifestation of this diversity in the physical and domestic realm, the design of housing types and an urban plan for a 350-unit neighborhood in Rotterdam.
