One Architecture

Béthune Market Hall

In Béthune, powerful architecture puts its rich history into a new dimension. One’s project for a new ‘Marché Permanent’, in collaboration with Zvi Hecker, puts the ‘Grand Place’ to a new use.

The ‘Marché Permanent’ is designed as a sculptural landscape - a terrace and open amphitheatre that extends the ‘Grand Place’ .
This relationship with the horizontality of the square is complemented by an architectural likeness to the ‘Beffroi’. It takes the beffroi’s asymmetry, with the different facades, shaped by the erratic character of history, as its starting point. The ‘Beffroi’ is not only spatially, but also formally integrated in the new design.
